Sons Of Anarchy S07E01 – Black Widower

The final season of Sons Of Anarchy kicked off with “Black Widower”, and as I was started the episode, I flashed back to a conversation I had with someone as I was leaving work. He said, “I really hope they end this season on an uplifting note”, and I replied with a laugh, “Yeah, I doubt that”. If the premiere is any indication, I will be correct. A lot of people are about to die for no damn reason. Let’s go.

-Let’s start with the opening montage, where we see Jax kicking a Nazi’s ass in prison (where else would Jax be?), Gemma is holding it down at home with the kids when she isn’t holding Tara’s head underwater, Nero is with the Mayans, Wendy is leaving rehab, where she will find a naked Juice doing push-ups at her house, and the porn business (Redwoody Studios, which is a nice touch) is up and running. But Jax is the appropriate place to start, as he sits down with the leader of the Aryans, played by Marilyn Manson (who has let himself go like shit). He killed the earlier guy because he was a snitch, and Jax is trying to smooth things over with the Aryans. He buys himself a little goodwill, but Manson wants a favor down the road.

-Then we have Gemma, oh, Gemma. I have always said that Katey Sagal is, by far, the best actor on SOA and she steals the scenes as she is driving home with Jax (who somehow gets let out of jail) and her conversation with Juice. You can see the guilt on her face as Jax tells her he can’t see the boys yet, but she does a brilliant job of hiding it from him. Then as she speaks to Juice, who is on the run from the club, she says that everything she has done has been to protect Jax, her grandkids and the club. I’m not even sure that Gemma believes this (I think she does), but I’m convinced.

-Then there is the club, who are trying to find out who ran T.O.’s (the leader of the black motorcycle gang) guys off the road last season. They finally get some answers when Bobby drags the main guy, who is in a wheelchair, down the road with his bike. And Tig…..who talks about fuckin’ their mom in the ass like that? Good grief. I will be very disappointed if he doesn’t die this season.

-Jax meets with the club at the table, and basically lays it all on the line: he is done with trying to take the club in a legal route and it’s going to get messy: if you want out, now is the time. But Chibbs, who is simply the best, says the club has his back. I have been waiting for this Jax for a while now, and while it might not be the best route, he can’t get the hang of this “good guy” shit, so why not? I figured this was coming with Tara gone.

-Jax rolls out a couple of plans: one is to have a sit-down, engineered by Nero, with the leader of the Asians, the Mayans and another guy whose name will come to me after I publish this. He wants them all to come to a homecoming party he just made up for himself (which I don’t think you can do, having a party for yourself, but he has a plan). Then, he follows T.O’s gang to a house where he thinks the guys that ran T.O.’s boys off the road are at, but instead, they find two pastors, another church-going fella and a woman having an orgy. Those poor people, they got jacked, obviously, and now there are more bodies on their hands, but Jax is cool with it, because they will need T.O.’s help in a bit. Also, Bobby said the church to which those pastors belong to have a lot of money. That will surely come up soon.

-Juice and Wendy living in the same house is perfect: two hot messes who probably will die when this is over. Unser goes to pick up Wendy, but finds a bag with the Reaper on it and his police instincts kick in; the DA also asked him to work with a new sheriff (remember, Eli died at Tara’s as well), but he declined. But he couldn’t resist temptation, and goes back to Wendy’s to investigate, where Juice finds him, puts a gun to his head and ties him up. Juice wouldn’t kill Unser, would he? You never know, I guess, desperate measures and all.

-Skip through to this party, where everyone is having a grand old time, and Gemma shoves a bottle in the face of this Asian guy because going over to Jax. Turns out, she told Jax this guy was Tara’s killer, and Jax tells T.O. that he needs the guy followed and brought to an address. Jesus, Gemma, how many more innocent (well, quasi-innocent, they’re all in gangs and shit) have to die?

-We get to the house, which I think is Jax’s house, and holy shit, Jax pulls out the hammers, the screwdrivers, a big-ass knife and salt to put in his wounds, because, why not? He tortures this guy for God knows how long (he also takes a puff of Chibbs’ cigarette and Chibbs is like, well, I guess I am done with this), and ends it by killing the guy with the same instrument Tara was killed with, stabbing him in the head and pulling back. This was up there (but not equal to) the head-crushing incident in Game Of Thrones, and it is now officially ON.

-Gemma finds Nero at her house and breaks down in his arms as the weight of what she has done (they mentioned that Tara’s funeral was just a couple days ago and she died maybe 10 days ago, so there hasn’t been much time for her to process everything). Man, Katey Sagal is a beast, bruh. An absolute beast.

“Black Widower” lived up to the hype and more, and the road to the end of Sons Of Anarchy will be paved in blood and brains and a whole slew of poor decisions on everyone’s part. So, get ya helmets and hold on tight.
